UI Design Concept Workshop
previous topic Back page 3 of 4 Next next topic
New projects kick off with a conceptual design workshop which brings together product managers, marketing, development, representative users (when available), information developers and Cognetics’ interaction designers. The goal of this workshop is to develop a clear product concept and represent that concept in initial sketches of the proposed functionality.

About the Workshop

The first stage of LUCID calls for the development of a User Interface Design Vision Statement, which summarizes the design goals of the product. This document is typically developed in a two-three day workshop (depending on the complexity of the product) which brings together product managers, marketing, development, representative users (when available), information developers and Cognetics’ interaction designers. The goal of this workshop is to develop a clear product concept and represent that concept in initial sketches of the proposed functionality. From this workshop, each department can begin to develop their own work plans.

For the usability/design group, the UI Design Vision Statement forms the basis for continued work, including user analysis. It raises issues such as what kinds of questions about how users will interact with the product must be answered to create an effective design which form the basis for requirements documents and initial prototypes.

A consulting designer typically facilitates these workshops, accompanied by a senior interaction designer or visual designer who will be involved in detailed interface design work or user analysis.

User Interface Vision Statement

High Concept

A brief product concept summary, including a statement of the features benefits the program will provide for its users.

Business Objectives

Competitive or positioning goals that are relevant to the design of the user interface. It is not intended to be a complete business case, but should include any important competitive considerations.

User Segments

Target users and a definition of their key characteristics

Technical Constraints

Any technical or environmental constraints which will affect the design of the product.

Usability Goals

An identification of the usability goals for the product, providing guidance for situations where the design must balance competing capabilities.

High Level Functionality Description

A list of the key functionality the product will provide. It is not intended as a complete functional requirement, but to state – from a user’s point of view – the capabilities of the software.

Screen Sketches or Scenarios

Screen sketches which illustrate the design concept or scenarios which describe typical interactions with the product. These are not a final design, but documentation of the initial interface design ideas.
