Background
Human-Computer Interaction. With a MS in Computer Science and a Ph.D.
in Cognitive Psychology, Dr. Kreitzberg understands the needs of computer systems and
their human users. Dr. Kreitzberg structures his solutions so that the human and automated
components of a system reinforce each other rather than conflict.
"Projects fail because we get the functionality more or less right
but the process more or less wrong. This happens because we focus on what software should
do rather than how it should do it."
Speaking and Writing. Dr. Kreitzberg has lectured and consulted at
such places as AT&T, Citibank, Dow Jones, Harvard University, the Library of Congress,
and Princeton University. He is the co-author with Ben Shneiderman of two textbooks, The
Elements of Fortran (1972) and the best-selling textbook Fortran Programming: A Spiral
Approach (1975), as well as other books. He has also written many scientific and popular articles.
"It is important to understand what communication needs to take
place and how to encourage it."
Favorite Strategies
- LUCID: Dr. Kreitzberg developed LUCID, which is both a user-centered
philosophy and a management strategy that augments existing software development
processes. LUCID models the user interface on the users conception of their work,
not the technical implementation. It is an iterative framework that guides projects
through Concept, Design, Build, and Release.
- Vision and Strategy: Dr. Kreitzberg works with project management to
establish a clear vision and direction for project and client organization alike. He helps
clients work through all aspects of software production while ensuring that the human
element is not lost in the mix.
- Technology Alignment. Managers who will direct the information economy
need a level of technology understanding that allows them to think in its language.
Technology fluency falls somewhere between computer literacy and the technical skills
required for information technology professionals. Organizations that doe not take this
step will find themselves with expensive, failed projects and software that doesnt
meet their needs.
Project Spotlight
Dr. Kreitzberg considers himself to be first and foremost a practitioner and is deeply
concerned with the practicalities of integrating usability-engineering techniques into the
software development process. For several years, he has been leading an effort to
construct a design practice to help software developers create highly usable interfaces.
He is particularly interested in how to create software designs that seamlessly integrate
with existing, or re-engineered, business processes.
Previously, Dr. Kreitzberg contributed to basic GUI strategies, and through Hyperties®
he helped solidify the principles of hypertext that govern the World Wide Web today.
Recently, Dr. Kreitzberg has turned his attention to organizational development and how
user-centered design underscores and encourages healthy business |
